How to verify a domain property in Google Search Console (DNS)
A Domain property covers every subdomain and both http and https in one place. It is verified with a DNS TXT record at your domain provider.
Step by step
- 1In Search Console, open the property selector and click Add property.
- 2Choose Domain, type your domain without https:// or www (for example example.com) and click Continue.
- 3Copy the TXT record Google shows (it starts with google-site-verification=).
- 4At your DNS provider, add a new TXT record on the root domain (host "@") with that value.
- 5Back in Search Console, click Verify. DNS can take from minutes to a day to update; if it fails, try again later.
Good to know
- Keep the TXT record: removing it can make you lose verification.
- If you can't edit DNS, add a URL-prefix property instead and verify with an HTML file or meta tag.
- Domain properties start collecting data from the moment they exist, but Google often backfills recent months.
