“Duplicate, Google chose different canonical than user”: meaning and how to fix it
Usually needs fixingWhat it means
The page declares a canonical, but Google ignored it and chose a different URL as the canonical.
Is it a problem?
Usually yes: your signals contradict each other, and Google may be indexing the version you don't want.
Common causes
- The canonical points to a page with different content
- Internal links, the sitemap and hreflang point to a different URL than the canonical
- The canonical target redirects, is noindexed or returns an error
- Content copied from or syndicated to a stronger site
How to fix it
- Make every signal agree: canonical, internal links, sitemap and hreflang should all point to the same URL
- Make sure the canonical target returns 200, is indexable and has the same content
- For syndicated content, ask partners to add a canonical back to you
How to check the fix
Inspect the URL and compare "User-declared canonical" with "Google-selected canonical".
